Magnetic Island (Yunbenun)

What is the Climate Action Strategy?

In February 2024 MICDA obtained a grant of $595,350 from the Great Barrier Reef Foundation (GBRF). The goal of this grant is to accelerate community climate action projects for Magnetic Island, by inviting residents and businesses to be involved and to 'take action'.

Electricity prices

Why are electricity prices high and what does this mean for Magnetic Island households and businesses?

Why did prices increase? Wholesale energy costs are estimated to increase significantly due to several factors, including:

  • Higher gas and coal prices faced by generators, principally due to the war in Ukraine.

  • Uncertainties associated with the availability and reliability of coal‐fired power plants in Queensland, and,

  • Other costs that have contributed to increases in notified prices include higher costs for retailers and higher network costs for most customer groups.

What does that mean for Magnetic Island households and businesses?

The following chart shows energy usage data by postcode 4819 as at 30 March 2023.

Where are we at?

MICDA, Totally Renewable Magnetic (TRM), and Zero Waste Magnetic Island (ZWMI), with funding from the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and as part of the Towards Net Zero Magnetic Island (Yunbenun) project, worked with the University of Queensland on a community survey to explore islanders actions and attitudes towards a range of waste and energy related behaviours.

The results of this Survey are now available. Feel free to share and use it.
